WHAT ARE THE ISSUES?

Highlights from a survey with 1003 residents of Otara

Earlier this year, we asked 1003 people in our Otara community what issues they were concerned with and how would they know if there was a positive change in that issue.

Thriving Otara is a movement developed to amplify our voices. We are a group of people that recognise that each of us has a role to play in supporting a thriving Otara.  But to understand what we can do, we need to agree on what the issues are.  1003 of our community spoke and identified the issues they were concerned with.

PRIORITY 1: HOUSING

We get sick all the time with chronic coughs due to housing issues. Our damp and cold house is not helping with our son’s health condition…

HOW COLD AND DAMP OUR HOMES ARE

We are concerned about the number of our family members constantly getting sick, and our older community members living in these conditions.

THE PRICE OF HOUSING IN OTARA

We are concerned by how expensive rent is now and families are struggling with this.
We are also unsure if our families are in positions to buy in our area.

PRIORITY 2: HEALTH

“We all need to be healthy to be around long enough to enjoy life and… start making better health choices at a younger age …”

UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLES

We are concerned that limited access to nutritious food in our community is leading to poor health and wellbeing.

SERVICES ARE STRUGGLING TO  MEET OUR NEEDS

We are concerned that we don’t get the right support at the right time.

PRIORITY 3: SAFETY

If our kids aren’t  safe – they will struggle to learn and enjoy being out in their community

VIOLENCE IN OUR HOMES

We are concerned about the harm caused by domestic violence and the impact this is having on our families.

ALCOHOL AND DRUG USE IN OUR COMMUNITY

We are concerned about the ease of access to drugs and the impact on our youth.
